Points If Your Comment Includes the Word Hitachi

Since this is the first post of 2010, I thought I’d continue the year-end roundup with that evergreen topic of post-holiday conversation, health and fitness. You may be asking yourself: Does consuming only egg nog and candy canes increase my risk of diabetes? Also, does lifting a wine glass to my mouth – repeatedly – count as exercise? I mean, you know, because it’s a really big glass?

Here’s what went well health-wise for me:

- Revamped my diet to high-fiber whole foods, mostly vegan, most of the time
- Kept to a 4x/week workout schedule, despite my busiest year ever
- Adjusted my weight set-point down a few pounds because of both

What didn’t go well:

- 2008’s problem and subsequent surgery came back with a vengeance. Not fun. (Though it did result in the diet revamping mentioned above. How’s that for glass-is-half-full thinking?)
- Too much stress-induced drinking and eating (though the fear of this experience kept that second one in check much of the time)

What I want in 2010:

- Keep up my good eating and exercise habits
- Find ways to handle stress that don’t involve Malbec or Ruffles. (Have at it in the comments, readers. The bawdier the better.)

In terms of your health, what went well this year, what didn’t, and what do you want more (or less) of in 2010?

P.S. Don’t miss this hilarious take on common mistakes, “10 Words You Need to Stop Misspelling.” (Thanks to Ayana for the link.)

maybe you should switch to a zinfandel and pringles. i hear they are more efficient at decreasing stress.
OR BETTER YET....

Hitachi, this is too easy. I volunteer to help Deonne with what Kathy suggests after the zinfandel and pringles.

First I get points for using the word Hitachi, then I help relieve stress. But I probably lose point for cheating on my wife and kids. Well, back to square one. I do give a great full body massage, thats not cheating is it?

Kath - Gawd is right. I'm working on it.

Tusk - I imagine infidelity would only replace the stress lost by said activity, so I'm not sure that's the way to go. And I doubt your wife would appreciate you sharing your full-body massage skills with women who aren't, uh, her. But I do appreciate the offers!

In 2009, got back on track with walking until my knee blew again. B/c of the pain, quit exercising altogether. Joined a gym in late 2009 and hired a trainer ... just need to go! Haven't gone to gym in 2010 yet but have snowshoed and treadmilled. My *plan* is regular exercise not to change my body but to uplift my spirit. Also plan to do my knee exercises as physical therapist has instructed! Oh, the resolutions just keep piling up.

Mandy - Snowshoeing and treadmilling are great exercise, so good job on that, and it sounds like you have a smart plan for taking care of your body going forward. I haven't worked out since before I left for Taos, but this weekend I'm back to the Stairmaster. I'm excited. (But I'm sick that way.)
