Lively, Frolicsome, Playful

I was working out this weekend, listening to my iPod on shuffle while pumping away on my beloved StairMaster (easy), when what came on but AC/DC’s heartfelt tribute to earthquakes, “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Now, I know what you’re thinking. But Deonne, you work at The Feminist Press! How can you listen to such mindless Man Rock? Where are your woman-respecting principles?

Well, for one thing, the song isn’t actually misogynistic. Dumb and sex-obsessed, yes, but who hasn’t been there before? If you pay attention it’s really just about one confident, energetic woman and her extremely lucky male partner. Who may or may not need an oxygen tank.

The thing is, that confidence and energy translates. I found myself not only pumping faster, but feeling, um, frisky. Something about the driving rhythms, chunky guitar riffs, and those lyrics with their tender sentiments (“Knockin’ me out with those American thighs” – so touching!) put me over. Or got me going. Or something.

Anyway, it got me wondering. What songs make you frisky?

P.S. My friend Summer Wood has a fantastic new blog about writing and place, called “The Where of It.” It makes for entertaining, thought-provoking reading regardless of whether you’re a writer or not, so check it out.

Frisky? Most of Luscious Jackson's "Fever In Fever Out" album, that's what. -ck

"MacArthur Park." Definitely.

Pour some sugar on me, see what you got started in the middle of the day.

That's one thing I love about you all - diversity!

Two of my go-to artists: M83 and Massive Attack. "Teardrop," especially, is pure soft-focus make-out music.

Massive Attack - nice. I should collect these songs (yes, even "MacArthur Park") and make a Life on the High Wire Music to Get Laid By mix.

Thanks for the shout out, Deonne! I'm loving your blog. Except now I've got that AC/DC song playing endlessly in my head. Well, at least it replaced that Freddy Fender song ("hey, baby, que paso? I thought I was your only vato") my son's band (the country-punk greats, TWO TON STRAP) played last week at the Taos Inn.

We miss you here in New Mexico!!!

Summer - AC/DC or Freddy Fender, that's a tough call, although anyone who rhymes que paso with vato has my vote. Viva Two Ton Strap for paying tribute!
